Wyoming Vacation Guide

The Wild Wild West

A trip to Wyoming means entering the world of the Wild West. A state that offers real life cowboys, ranches, and mining towns, its visitors can experience life as it has always been for its people, past and present. Wyoming is out of the ordinary from the landscape, towering mountains to bottomless canyons, fields of wildflowers and pristine skies, to its activities, cattle drives, hikes, historic fort tours. The whole state is a true celebration of the outdoors with rafting, biking, camping, and fishing, that visitors return year after year. The five tourism regions will each offer a glimpse into the people and the state…come and visit them all.

The Southern Region

The southern part of the state is known as Medicine Bow-Flaming Gorge Country. The spirit of the Old West is always on display here and the landscape will shock with sparkling deserts, scenic mountains, and dramatic cliffs. The region is home to Cheyenne, the state capital and the commercial, cultural, historical, and recreational hub for the state’s residents and tourists. While in town catch the historical walking tour that passes the capitol, Governor’s Mansion, and the Wyoming State Museum. Outside of Cheyenne is Curt Gowdy State Park featuring two reservoirs for fishing and water sports and providing plenty of open air for camping, hiking, and rock climbing. Near the town of Rock River lies Como Bluff. The site is one of the largest dinosaur discoveries in the world containing 253 of the 256 known Jurassic Period mammals. For those looking to relax, head to Saratoga. Home to numerous hot springs, the premier attraction is the Hobo Pool that stays 120 degrees and is open all day. Wildlife watchers will want to visit the community of Wamsutter in the Red Desert. The desert is home to some of the largest remaining herds of wild horses, deer, and the only desert elk herd in North America.

Oregon Trail Country

Oregon Trail-Rendezvous Country is known for its incredible views and historical significance to the state. Travel the same road as the families using the Oregon Trail through canyons and mountain passes. Fort Laramie is the oldest post in the state and has served as a place to rest for travelers and gold seekers, a location in the Pony Express, and a station for Overland Stage. Today, it serves as a place of historical learning with 22 original building that have been restored for the public. The city of Casper, Wyoming’s second largest city, has great cultural attractions such as the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, the Ft. Caspar Museum and Historical Site, the Nicolaysen Art museum, and the Werner Wildlife Museum. In the area, visitors will not want to miss a trip to the Salt Creek Oil Fields, the largest light-oil fields in the world, or a visit to Teapot Dome, a well-recognized butte and geological phenomenon. History buffs will need to visit the Independence Rock State Historical Site where many Oregon Trail travelers stopped to rest and 50,000 carved or painted their names on the large roc

Jackson Hole Country

The far west region of Wyoming is Jackson Hole-Jim Bridger Country. This region is known for its beautiful scenery and great resort towns. Visitors looking for a water enthusiasts haven should visit Alpine, home to the Palisades Reservoir that offers water skiing, fishing, and hiking. The Bridger-Teton National Forest, at 3.4 million acres, is a great place for camping, hiking, hunting, kayaking, fishing, white water rafting, horseback riding, and great winter activities such as skiing and snowshoeing. It’s known for its extensive wildlife and fish species that live in the three rivers that run through the park. Jackson Hole is a 40-mile long valley ringed by the Teton Mountain Range that is home to a myriad of communities including Jackson, Wilson, Teton Village, Moose, Kelley, and Moran Junction. The area is known for the intense snowfall that delights skiers and snowboarders every winter and the Snake River that runs through the valley. The river is home to an abundance of trout, and its rushing waters make it a great destination for a wild white water rafting trip.

Devil's Tower and Buffalo Bill Country

Devils Tower-Buffalo Bill Country can be found along the northern border of the state. The rolling landscape of the Thunder Basin National Grassland lies in sharp contrast to the towering Devils tower National Monument. The town of Cody provides many cultural and historical learning centers for visitors to learn about the west and the state of Wyoming. Visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Whitney Gallery of Western Art, the Draper Museum of Natural History, and the Old West Miniature Village and Museum while in town. The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area sits on the border of Wyoming and Montana and is home to the Bighorn River, as well as, the Bighorn Lake. The area is great for outdoor recreation, photography, and wildlife watching. The Black Hills National Forest is home to the Devil’s Tower National Monument, a 1,267-foot high rock that draws sightseers from around the world.

Wyoming is a vacation destination perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors and appreciates beautiful views, land formations, and geography. Home to some of the nation’s greatest national parks like Grand Teton and Yellowstone, there is so much to do and see that you may have to visit more than once.
