The New River Region The New River/Green Valley region of the state is abundant with rich natural resources. The Gauley drops almost 700 feet through 28 miles of canyon and ranges from Class III to Class V+ rapids. The New River, the second oldest river in the world, drops 240 feet over a 14-mile run through a deep sandstone gorge and boasts Class I-V rapids making it the biggest whitewater river in the east. For the winter season, skiers will not want to miss visiting Ghent, home to Winterplace Resort. With the mountain open until 10 pm every night and offering 27 trails and slopes, this is a great family skiing area offering skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.
