Mountain Lakes Region The central part of West Virginia is known as the Mountain Lakes Region. It's a peaceful place of forested mountains, lakes, rivers and streams, clear skies and starry nights. The region is also the location of Stonewall Jackson’s home outside of Weston. Civil War buffs will want to travel around the rest of the region, as its home to many other sites of battles and famous places in the War. Travel down US 19 and Interstate 79 to get to one of the most abundant wildlife areas in the east. A Mecca for hunting, fishing, bird watching, and out door lovers, it is also the location of numerous lakes and rivers. There are five major lakes in this region - Stonewall Jackson, Stonecoal, Burnsville, Sutton and Summersville and the Elk and Gauley rivers, provide a great experience for float and bank fishing. Camping enthusiasts will not want to miss Cedar Creek State Park in the western part of the region. It offers great amenities and activities such as a pool, playground and miniature golf course; while a staff naturalist plans recreational and educational programs. |
