Volcano Country Just south of the bustling cities of Seattle and Tacoma lays the region where rolling hills broaden into looming volcanoes. Volcano Country is home to Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams, but it does offer other great natural attractions. Visitors will find great climbing, biking, and hiking trails. For those looking to visit Mount Rainier National Park, visit the town of Ashford. Located just outside the base of the park, it’s a great starting point for long-term hikers to those just looking for a day trip. Standing at over 14, 000 feet, Mount Rainier is an active volcano that offers hiking, climbing, snowshoeing, and great scenery for viewing or photographing. This region is also home to the state capital, Olympia. This city offers great views of the Puget Sound, a bustling boardwalk, Percival Landing, Heritage Park, and a host of museums and tours featuring the city and state’s history. Leaving the region without a trip to Mount St. Helens is not doing your trip justice. In 1980, an earthquake caused this volcano to erupt, leaving a newly changed landscape and respect for the volcanoes that reside in our country. Now you can find Crater views, new lakes, ancient lava flows, blown down trees, mudflows and old-growth forest while hiking along the many trails created by the National Park Service. The monument now has a center inside where you can learn more about volcanoes and what made this one erupt over 20 years ago. Volcano Country offers the best of both worlds where you can shop at a new store, hike, photograph waterfalls, or eat a new restaurant in your new favorite city. |
