The Gulf Coast Region
The Gulf Coast of Texas offers over 600 miles of glistening coastline with peninsulas and islands, cities and towns, beaches and parks, all exuding their own magical charm. The largest city in the region and the fourth largest in the nation, Houston, was founded as a small riverboat landing on Buffalo Bay, but is now home to SpaceCity USA, along with other industrial and financial institutions. Great Texan pride can be found at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the largest livestock exposition in the world featuring great entertainment and championship cowboys. The city is also home to many professional sport teams including the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, and the Houston Aeros. A city with quite a storied past is Galveston, found at the northern tip of the region. In 1900, one of the most devastating hurricanes ever hit this island and claimed more than 6,000 lives. A seawall was soon after built and has protected the island ever since. Meteorologists have studied the 32 miles of beach to learn more about hurricanes and how to prevent them. Corpus Christi is one of Texas’ most popular beach destinations and an important deep-water port. Here you can find the USS Lexington and the Texas State Aquarium that offer park and picnic areas. Along the shimmering waterways you can also find the Corpus Christi Water Garden at Bayfront Arts and Science Park. It features over 150-lighted fountains to delight visitors who come to see, hear, and touch the garden’s water. One cannot talk about Texas tourism without mentioning South Padre Island. The island is located across the bay of Laguna Madre and features accommodations from campgrounds to high rises and luxury condos. Fabulous seafood restaurants can be found along the beach featuring fresh catch harvested from the Gulf of Mexico. Nature enthusiasts and birders will enjoy the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, home to many species of plants and animals. Enjoy the shore by bicycling, shelling, or horseback riding on the beach and enjoy the water by jet skiing, bay surfing, parasailing, and deep-sea fishing. The Gulf Coast showcases gorgeous stretches of shoreline while keeping its Texan heritage strong. |

It’s a blazing hot summer afternoon, but the scorching heat does not seem to affect the crowds at Schlitterbahn, New Braunfels. Some of them are enjoying a drink at the floating bar. Others, lathered with sunscreen, are lazily floating on tubes in the Comal River or in one of Schillterbahn’s artificial rivers.
