The Great Lakes Region The Great Lakes region of the state is centrally located and falls along the Missouri River. The river has four reservoirs in South Dakota created by dams that form the “Great Lakes”. Sailors, anglers, skiers, swimmers, and campers flock to this playground to enjoy the great outdoors. There are miles of hiking and biking trails along the river and in the state’s many parks in the area. Anglers interested in Walleye should fish the Sharpe, Francis, Lewis, and Clark lakes. There are also excellent opportunities for catching white bass, smallmouth bass and channel catfish in the region’s reservoirs. In Chamberlain, there are great opportunities to see quillwork and beadwork created by the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota Native American tribes. History buffs will want to visit Mobridge, the burial site for Sitting Bull, one of the great Lakota leaders. Also, the Lewis and Clark Trail runs through the state. See where these explorers found pronghorns and prairie dogs for the first time. |
