The Glacial Lakes & Praries The Northeastern part of South Dakota is known as the Glacial Lakes & Prairies region and was formed when the glaciers receded to the north over 20,000 years ago. Today, the area is known for its hills, its plains, and its lakes formed by this glacial migration. Visit De Smet to see the Laura Ingalls Wilder Homestead. Here, you can see the settlement that inspired her book, Little House on the Prairie. Sica Hollow State Park is a great place to camp. Activities include canoeing, boating, fishing, and hiking. Watertown, the state’s 4th largest city, is home to two lakes; Lake Pelican and Lake Kampeska. With great outdoor activities, a thriving waterfront and downtown, and great cultural activities, this town is a perfect destination for families. On the border of Minnesota is a resort area called Big Stone Lake. A haven for hunters, fishermen, and tourists, there are many lodges and resorts to choose from such as Hartford Beach Resort, Mallard Point Lodge, Schmidt’s Landing, and Silent Falls Resort. |
