The Black Hills, Badlands, and Lakes Region The Black Hills, Badlands, and Lakes region is along the western edge of the state. Here, visitors can see the “Shrine of Democracy”, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. This creation, showing the busts of presidents Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt, took over 14 years and $1 million dollars to create. Equally as impressive is the Crazy Horse Memorial that, when finished, will be taller than a 60-story skyscraper. It has taken over 50 years to get where the memorial is today and it is still a work in progress! Outdoor enthusiasts will want to see the state’s eight national and state parks including The Badlands and the Black Hills National Forest. Badlands National Park, created by wind and water, is full of canyons, pyramids, and knobs that are absolutely picturesque and unique. The Black Hills, aptly named by the Lakota people, are covered by a thick carper of pine and spruce trees, making the area look black from a distance. Here you can fish for bass, trout, and walleyes or hunt for turkey, deer, antelope, and elk. Experience the land of Indians and western American history. See the beauty and elegance of the Black Hills and Badlands. See what South Dakota can offer you as a vacation destination. |
