The Eastern Coast The most well known tourism districts are along the eastern coast of the state. Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand are home to some of the country’s favorite shoreline destinations. Whether you are into playing golf or the miniature version, this region is the place for you. Myrtle Beach is not only home to many beautiful golf courses, it also has more mini-golf courses than anywhere else in the country. The strip provides hours of entertainment with numerous water parks, arcades, shops, and clubs. For those seeking more relaxing destinations, one should look to Litchfield Beach or Pawley’s Island. The relaxing aura of Pawley’s Island can be found in its well-known handmade hammocks. | The Low Country and Resort Islands Traveling south will take you to elegant and historic Charleston and past to the Low Country and Resort Islands. The charm of the pre-Revolutionary War city of Charleston can be found walking its cobblestone streets and browsing its many antique shops and boutiques. History is prevalent while visiting its battle sites and Civil War era plantations. If taking a drive through scenic South Carolina interests you, do not miss out on the Ashley River Road Scenic Highway. It tells the story of South Carolina history from the settling of the state to the present time, while displaying some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. Making your way towards Hilton Head and the rest of the low country will take you to some of the finest resorts in the nation. Known for its golf and tennis facilities, Hilton Head is home to one of the PGA’s national golf events. Cities such as Beaufort and Parris Island highlight the state’s French and Spanish heritage while providing miles of naturally preserved shoreline. Traveling towards the interior of the state will take you through the Indian and Lake country of South Carolina. | Interior South Carolina Although not quite as illustrious as the eastern shore of the state, the interior bordered by North Carolina and Georgia holds many lesser-known treasures. The tourism areas of Santee Cooper, Olde English District, Capital City & Lake Murray, Old 96 District, and the Upcountry house the majority of the lakes, rivers, and waterfalls that make the state such a vacation destination. A favorite lake for summer water sports is Lake Wylie, bordered by both North and South Carolina. The lake is formed by a dam on the Catwaba River and has been in existence since 1904. The Upcountry is the only area of the state to grab a piece of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Looming over the foothills that used to be home to the Cherokee Indians, the mountains house a scenic drive called the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Highway. It runs from the Home of the South Carolina Peach Festival, Gaffney, in the north to Anderson on the southern border of the state. | South Carolina has much to offer as a vacation destination for any kind of enthusiast. Whether it is golf and tennis, sunbathing, whitewater rafting, or touring historical sites, the Palmetto state can cater to anyone’s needs. South Carolina, founded by both the French and Spanish, has a rich cultural heritage that shows up in every corner of this beautiful state. |
