The Mount Hood Region The Mt. Hood/ Columbia River Gorge region is one of pure extremes in nature. Outdoor enthusiasts travel to this region to test their prowess in one of the most intense destinations in the United States. Mt. Hood is one of the tallest peaks in the Cascade Range and one of the only places in the country to ski all year long. Timberline Lodge Ski Area, closed only two weeks a year, hosts the longest continually run ski race in America, the Golden Rose Ski Classic every June. Mt. Hood is the second most climbed mountain in the world as well as being a dormant volcano, which scientists predict could erupt in the next 75 years. The Columbia River Gorge is home to the country’s largest concentration of high waterfalls and the nation’s only national scenic area. The gorge is the only sea-level spot in the Cascade Mountains and can get up to 4,000 feet deep in some areas. While in the area, you can’t miss out on the falls that have been formed over billions of years. Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. Though Multnomah Falls is grand and popular, there are more than ten other falls that would be a shame to miss. Hike, bike, ski, snowboard, mountain bike, bird, raft, climb, and relax in this destination for those looking for an extreme vacation. |
