Southern Oregon Southern Oregon has the perfect mix of attractions for those looking for a natural and cultural vacation destination. Offering a myriad of historical destinations and world-class fishing and rafting, this region is a great place to explore the outdoors. The Rogue, Klamath and Umpqua rivers are great for anglers and rafters coming to visit the area. Grants Pass is a classic Oregon river town on the legendary Rogue River and one of the best places in the west for whitewater adventures, forest trails, and fly-fishing. Outside the towns of Glide and Idleyld Park is the Colliding Rivers area where the Little River and North Umpqua River meet head-on, the only spot in the US where such a phenomenon occurs. Crater Lake National Park is the heart of this region. Located outside of Klamath Falls, it is widely known for its spectacular views and intense blue color of the lake. Although the park is closed for the winter, as it gets the most intense snowfall in the nation, the summer offers great activities to enjoy the majestic views. Visitors may navigate the Rim Drive around the lake, enjoy boat tours on the lake surface, stay in the historic Crater Lake Lodge, camp at Mazama Village, or hike some of the park's various trails including Mt. Scott at 8,929 ft. For a cultural visit to the region, stop into Ashland, home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The OSF is the nation's oldest and largest theatre in rotating repertory and presents an eight-month season of 11 plays, five by Shakespeare and six by classic and contemporary playwrights, in rotating repertory in three theatres for great variety enjoyed by visitors, locals, actors, and admirers. |
