Topsail Island is a 26-mile long barrier island consisting of three towns - North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach. It has a rich and varied history and a local folklore including ones regarding its etymology. It's not exactly home of the space program, but Topsail Island can be called the birthplace of space technology - the origins of Jet Propulsion and NASA.
