History You can browse through the history of Surf City beginning with the arrival of ‘Project Bumble Bee’, at the Missiles and More Museum, located in Topsail Beach. It features video and audio clippings of history, artifacts and exhibits from the colonial era to World War II. When the space testing program of Operation Bumblebee was dismantled, the government sold the island to the public. Many of the original military structures stand testimony to the past and you can experience them first hand, especially the observation towers. A concrete slab, which is the Jolly Roger Motel’s patio, and seven rectangular towers that haphazardly dot the island used to house equipment to track and time the missiles that were developed and test-launched here.
The swing bridge over the intra-coastal waterway connecting Topsail Island with the mainland is a major attraction. Prior to World War II, the only access to Topsail Island was by boat. Surf City's swing bridge is an integral part of the heritage on Topsail Island and it is still operational! Visit the photo series of the Swing Bridge as it opens, the vessels navigating the channel while the bridge is open, and finally the swing bridge closing.
