The Eastern Beaches For a vacation to some of the east coast’s most beautiful beaches, one should look no further than the state that was First in Flight. The Wright Brothers National Memorial is located in Kitty Hawk, near Kill Devil Hills. Chosen by the brothers from Ohio for its calm breezes and rolling dunes, vacationers continue to flock there for hang gliding, kite flying, and parasailing. Nags Head could be called the first city of the Outer Banks, the northern barrier islands just off the coast. Found by ships for its uncharacteristically large mountainous dunes, it became home to pirates such as Blackbeard. Although most of the dunes have been taken away over time by wind and water, one can still see the once majestic dunes by way of the last towering sand dune, Jockey’s Ridge. In Cape Hattaras, you can visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, which highlights the state’s maritime history and the 1,000 shipwrecks that occurred there in the years of discovery, piracy, and war. Traveling south from the Outer Banks will lead you to Carolina’s Crystal Coast characterized by white sand and clear blue water. From Atlantic Beach to Emerald Isle and down to Topsail Island and Wilmington, you will find vacationers combing the beach for sharks teeth or fishing off the end of quaint piers. These beaches are perfect for those searching for a laid back and relaxing trip to the shore. Cities such as Oriental, Havelock, and Jacksonville are known for their delicious seafood restaurants. In Morehead City, a local’s favorite is the Sanitary Fish Market and Restaurant, opened in 1938 by advertising that it’s meals “slept in the ocean last night.” As summer turns to fall, the foliage of the Heartland and Mountain regions draws visitors towards the west. |
