The Central and Western Regions The central and western parts of the state have a rich past and natural beauty for history and nature buffs alike. Although known for its years of bountiful tobacco crops, North Carolina now has a reputation for its merlots and chardonnays. Travel to Albermarle and the Stony Mountain Vineyards to tour the winery and grounds and do a little tasting. North Carolina is home to nearly 600 golf courses; one can travel the state trying some of the regions most challenging courses. Visiting the Pinehurst and Southern Pines areas is a must for any avid golfer as this area was built as a tribute to the history of golf in the Carolinas. Heading farther west into the Mountain region you will find many quaint mountain towns with a host of fall and winter festivals and shows. Vacationing in historic Asheville you can frequent museums of every interest from the Civil War to the Biltmore Family. By way of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the adventurous traveler can hike parts of the Appalachian Trail or ski and any of the mountain resorts while the tame of heart can visit cities such as Blowing Rock or Brevard. These cities are alive with festivals and street vendors from spring till fall. |
