Western New York For a taste of New York culture, arts, museums, and recreation, head to the western region of the state. Victorian era charm can be found throughout the region but be sure to check out the 1891 Fredonia Opera House in Fredonia or the 60/60 Victorian House of Gifts in Cassadaga. Outdoors lovers have great options in this region. Visit Lake Erie State Park in Brocton to experience 355 acres along the shore and enjoy camping, the beach, swimming, playgrounds, hiking and nature trails, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Allegheny State Park offers over 65,000 acres with which to enjoy beaches, hiking, fishing, camping, ninety miles of snowmobile trails, and the Restored Quaker Store that houses a park museum documenting history of the park. This region is also home to Niagara Falls, the legendary waterfalls that are classified as a natural wonder. In fact, each minute the Niagara River pours 40 million gallons of water 180 feet over a rocky ledge two-thirds of a mile wide. There are a group of lakes that are laid out like fingers on a hand and, therefore, named Finger Lakes. The surrounding area is known for the production of fine wine and is a favorite vacation destination in the state. Take a trip on the Canandaigua Wine Trail that includes a group of exceptional wineries, notably the Arbor Hill Grapery, on the western border of the region in Monroe and Ontario Counties. There is also a great tour of the wineries on Lake Keuka. Eight distinctive wineries surround the lake, each offering an unforgettable experience and great wine. |
