View of Long Island's Greenport Harbor from the Front Porch
A two-hour drive (or train ride) east of Manhattan, past malls, strip centers and suburban developments, Long Island divides leading to the picturesque 27-mile North Fork, surrounded by Long Island Sound, Great Peconic Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The warm sea breezes create a microclimate akin to those of Bordeaux, France … and to one of the most exciting and influential new wine regions in the world. The landscape of the North Fork is dotted with golden-hued vineyards, horse pastures, greenhouses, fishing villages, historic barns and 19th-century churches surrounded by tree-lined villages. Along the way, produce stands and farmsteads sell farm-fresh produce and local fare: pumpkins, cheese, fruit pies and an abundance of fresh vegetables, reflective of their 350-year old farming heritage.
Harbor Knoll is a gracious water-front home built in the 1800's as a summer residence for a wealthy Southern family, subsequently owned by a mayor of Greeport, a niece of General Custer, and for the last thirty years by the Miller family. Its grand Dutch Colonial/Victorian architecture exudes a sense of casual elegance and luxury as much as it evokes warmth and comfort. Considered by many to be one of the finest inns on the North Fork, Harbor Knoll offers guests an opportunity to relax and unwind in a sophisticated yet understated environment … whether you choose to go antiquing, wine-tasting, go to the beach or simply read a book on our spacious porch overlooking the harbor.
The Library
Perched on the harbor with long views of Shelter Island, Harbor Knoll is as memorable and welcoming in winter as it is in summer. During the warmer months, enjoy the serene views from one of our Adirondack chairs overlooking the harbor, private dock (from which you can discover waterfront restaurants by water taxi), or enclosed porch. When the nights turn cool, curl up by the fireplace with a book from our library and a well-made cup of tea.
Gordon and Leueen Miller purchased Harbor Knoll in 1974, as a weekend retreat from their residence in Manhattan. Recently, Leueen retired as a diplomat from the United Nations and took up year-round residence in Greenport, while Gordon continues to practice law in New York City and on Long Island.
Harbor Knoll reflects the family's international travels and interests, including the family's British, Irish and American heritage. You are welcome to relax in this unique, historic home. We hope that its calm presence and understated elegance will form the setting for a memorable, well-deserved break.
All guest rooms offer private baths and a beautiful view of the harbor … and hence cooling breezes during the warmer months. Opened year-round, guests are served a delicious full country breakfast either on the front porch overlooking the harbor or in the formal dining room. Newspapers are provided for your convenience.
Each guest room is furnished with a television, air conditioning, a supply of good books, as well as sea breezes and the sound of waves lapping against the shoreline. All rates include breakfast, newspaper, and afternoon refreshments. Rates are subject to a 91/4% NY State tax.
