Southeast New Mexico The Southeast region offers visitors plenty of attractions to see including historical, cultural, natural, and the very interesting. In 1947, a farmer outside of Roswell found debris that the US Air Force originally claimed was part of a “flying saucer”. People flock to the area for the annual UFO festival and then drive to Alamogordo to tour the New Mexico Museum of Space History. The Old Fort Sumner Museum is home to Billy the Kid’s grave and was the location of the confinement of Navaho and Apache Indians during the 1860’s Long Walk. Right down the road are the Fort Sumner State Monument and the Bosque Redondo Memorial. Outside Alamogordo is the White Sands National Monument, a huge 275- miles area of white gypsum sand dunes in the middle of the state. Another great location to see nature at its best is Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The largest cavern, the Big Room, is the size of eight football fields and stays at 56 degrees year-round. A great time can be found at attractions run by the Mescalero Apache Tribe. They own Ski Apache, located near the Sierra Blanca Peak, and a casino at the Inn of the Mountain Gods. |
