Native American History Visit the Pueblo Indian ruin of Kaupoge or “place of shell beads near water.” This was the location where the plans for La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asísi, the Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi, were laid out in 1607. Then take a walking tour of the Palace of the Governors, the oldest building in the country. Explore the sites of ancient homes at Tsankawi and the Puye Cliff Dwellings, marvel at the beauty of the St. Francis Cathedral, visit the San Miguel mission, the oldest church in America and tour the home of artist Georgia O’Keefe and the summer house of writer D. H. Lawrence. Other places worthy of note are the Museum of International Folk Art and the living history museum of El Rancho de las Golondrinas that portrays Spanish Colonial life. |
