Reno-Tahoe Region One of the great playgrounds of the West can be found in the Reno-Tahoe Territory. This region is also home to many of Nevada’s most scenic and historic recreation areas. A site of great interest is Pyramid Lake, the remainder of a prehistoric inland sea that used to cover much of Nevada and surrounding states. The lake is ringed by interesting tufa rock formations and offers fishing and boating. The regions largest cities are Reno and Sparks. Before Las Vegas, there was Reno, the state’s first gambling and divorce capital. Downtown Sparks is the location of Victorian Square, a trendy area that hosts unique special events including rib cook-offs, car shows, and festivals. The city also has hotel-casinos. Virginia City is a main attraction with its wooden sidewalks and false front saloons, restaurants, and businesses. Visitors can take a ride on the reconstructed Virginia & Truckee Railroad, which operates between Virginia City and the mining town of Gold Hill or visit its museums, casinos, gourmet restaurants, and entertainment facilities. Deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range lies Lake Tahoe. One of the deepest and clearest lakes in the world, its beauty is shocking and is only equaled by the mountains that tower over it. Some of the nation’s best skiing and riding can be found in the resorts that surround the lake. Golf enthusiasts will be delighted by the numerous courses designed by legends like Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. |
