Missouri River Country The Missouri River Country is known as the ultimate sportsman’s paradise. A spirit of adventure and love of the natural outdoors will fit in well in this region. Antelope, whitetail and mule deer, elk, turkey and other game keep hunters visiting year after year while fisherman continue to cast for walleye, small-mouth bass, ling and Chinook salmon. You can also follow the historic trial of Lewis and Clark and learn more about the history of our continent while searching for dinosaur fossils. The Sioux and Assiniboine people were the first to live in Missouri River Country and you can learn more about their way of life and the end to their reign by visiting the Fort Peck reservation, where traditional dance, song, and tribal ceremonies are still experienced today. The Outlaw Trail was a route of escape for turn-of-the-century outlaws such as Kid Curry, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, members of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, or the Wild Bunch, Dutch Henry and others. Visitors to Missouri River Country can travel this very trail to find historical walking tours and signs pinpointing locations of bank robberies, outlaw hideouts, and historic shoot-outs. The Montana Badlands are home to some of the most important dinosaur finds on the North American continent. A T-Rex, found in 1902, and the most complete T-Rex skeleton in the world, found in 1999, are among finds that have solidified this region as a paleontologist’s dream. The Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum and the Phillips County Museum in Malta are great attractions for those wanting to take part in a dig or to just learn more about these great discoveries. This region offers the kind of hunting that other parts of the world only dream about, in fact, you will find yourself outnumbered by the game and birds you are hunting. What only improves a hunting trip in this area is the breathtaking scenery you will be privy to. The Fort Peck Reservoir, the shores of the Missouri River, and the Nelson Reservoir will provide anglers plenty of room to enjoy the great outdoors while casting lines and bringing in fish. |
