Gold West Country Southwest Montana, known as Gold West Country, is an agricultural region blessed with snow-capped mountains, some of the best trout fishing in the world, and close proximity to both Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. The region is also rich with history. Visit Virginia City to see what Old Montana was like in the 1890’s. Visit Robbers Roost where legend will tell that this roadhouse was the hangout for famous outlaws. According to local legend, the “bad guys” would come here to plan their next stagecoach hold up. The city also offers great museums and hands-on attractions to highlight the gold rush days. If its rock hounding you are interested in, travel to Crystal Park. Here you can find amethyst and smoky quartz while digging for free in an area of the park specifically set aside for rock hounding. The best trout fishing in the state can be found in these areas: the Ruby River Reservoir in Alder, the Missouri River near Townsend, Big Hole River in Jackson, and Canyon Ferry Lake in Helena. These communities provide access to supplies, outfitters and an outdoor experience to never forget. If you are coming to Montana for the winter, be sure to bring your skis or snowboard! Discovery Basin provides steep challenging runs for the expert skier, Great Divide has night skiing and difficulty levels for the whole family, and Maverick Mountain has diverse terrain including back bowls, steep chutes, and alpine meadows. |
