The Northwest Region

Missouri’s Northwest Region brings the past to the present in their towns and cities steeped in history. Visit the town of Marceline where Walt Disney grew up. Walk down the town’s beautiful Main Street and stop in at the school where Mr. Disney carved his initials into his desk. History buffs will want to travel to Laclede, the boyhood home of General John J. Pershing who is the highest-ranking military official in U.S. history. The city of Independence is rich in Mormon history and offers a Missouri Mormon Walking Trail. Kansas City is the place to visit for great shopping, nightlife, and beautiful architecture. Sightsee to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous bronze fountains that make Kansas City the city with the second most fountains in the world, behind Rome. The city is also full of museums and other cultural attractions that bring life to the past. Jesse James made the first daylight bank robbery in his hometown of Liberty where you can visit his gravesite today and take a tour of the Jesse James Bank Museum.

The Northeast Region

Traveling east brings you to the northeastern part of the state where you will find quaint river towns edging the Mississippi River, cultural, historical, and educational museums, and underground caves. Enter through the gleaming Gateway Arch in St. Louis, standing at an impressive 630 feet. While in town catch a Cardinal’s baseball game or Rams football game or tour the St. Louis Science Center featuring an Omnimax Theatre and thrilling hands on exhibits. Walk through St. Louis Union Station, an eccentric mixture of shops, restaurants, and nightclubs. The capital city of Jefferson City is home to one of the most beautiful state capitols in the world and was built in 1918. Take guided tours of the city featuring the Governor’s Mansion, the Jefferson City Highway Patrol Museum, and breathtaking Lincoln University. The town of St. Charles will delight visitors with its gas-lit streets and unique attractions like the Haviland Platter Museum displaying a collection of dishware made in Limoges, France. Riverside towns run up and down the Mississippi River and bring a delicate look to the state and region.

The Southeast Region

The Southeast Region is known for breathtaking scenery full of lakes, forests, hills, rivers, and springs. The outdoor adventures provided by the landscape coupled with fun and exciting historic attractions make it a great vacation destination. The first permanent settlement west of the Mississippi is Ste. Genevieve. The town has over 50 historic homes and building built in French Creole style that you can tour and the Great River Road Interpretive Center where you can learn about the Spanish, French, and American influences on the city and region. Cape Girardeau is a historic city with updated amenities and a charming aura. Visit the “Missouri Wall of Fame Mural” featuring names like J.C. Penny, Jesse James, Ginger Rogers, and Harry S. Truman. Outside of Poplar Bluff lies the unspoiled Lake Wappapello offering fishing, sailing, and swimming. Van Buren is home to Big Spring, the largest spring in the world producing 277 million gallons of clean pure water every day.

The Southwest Region

If entertainment is in your itinerary, make sure it includes southwest Missouri. Do not miss a trip to Branson and nearby Kimberling City, America’s new live entertainment capital that brings in great musical acts and stellar performances. While in town, visit an original five and dime in historic downtown to see how shopping was in the 1930’s. Shell Knob is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts as it is home to Table Rock Lake where visitors can fish, boat, water ski, and swim within its 800 miles of shoreline. For the ultimate water adventure, however, locals recommend the Lake of the Ozarks that meanders through the beautiful Ozark hills. Explore caves and enjoy music shows when not involved in a water activity such as boating, water skiing, or fishing. In nearby Osage Beach, visit the Factory Outlet Village to get great deals shopping at stores like Coach, Nike, and BCBG.

Missouri offers great attractions whether outdoors exploring the Ozarks or indoors learning more about how the west was discovered. The great Mississippi River provided early settlers with the means to live and continues to do so for present day Missourians.
