The Hills Region The Hills Region offers a magnificent countryside with hills and valleys and scenic lakes. The area is known for its dotting of small historic towns with diverse history and personalities. Drive through Tupelo to see Elvis Presley’s birthplace. Then travel to Corinth to drive through its historic districts featuring beautiful houses and see the Civil War Interpretive Center, being built by the National Park service. Visitors to the Center will learn about the 16 National Historic Landmark sites located within Corinth, extant Civil War-related sites throughout Alcorn County and other historic, recreation and commercial amenities the region has to offer. This new center will make Corinth a center for Civil War historians and buffs. Another town to visit is Holly Springs known for its rich history and diverse heritage. While most pre-Civil War homes were burned during the war, Grant spared this small town to give us today one of the most impressive collection of antebellum properties one can find. The streets of Holly Springs are lined with these majestic homes, built with a quality and taste virtually unknown at the time in Northern Mississippi. You can also visit Walter Place Estate, the home of Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. | The Delta Region South West of the Hills Region lays the Delta Region, an area whose history surrounds the raging Mississippi River, and one of the most fertile areas in the world. Lands that once were fields of cotton and other crops are now world-class golf courses. The area, known also as “Blues Alley”, gave rise to artists such as B.B. King and Muddy Waters. The land of the Delta Blues is always hosting some blues festival, like the Delta Blues and Heritage Festival. Visit Clarksdale to stroll down the hallways of the Delta Blues Museum. Blues devotees will enjoy a visit to this attraction, filled with Blues artifacts and memorabilia. In Greenville, historians will not want to miss the Winterville Mounds and Museum, one of the largest groups of Indian mounds in the Mississippi. | The Pines Region The Pines Region is located in eastern Mississippi and is home to picturesque farming communities and beautiful forests. There are so many ways to enjoy the outdoors of this region from hiking, to biking, sightseeing. With so many things to see, you will want to save time for everything there is to do. In Philadelphia you can visit the reservation of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians while staying at the Pearl River Resort. It offers two casinos and two championship level golf courses. Right outside the city is the birthplace of the Choctaw Indian Tribe, the Nanih Waiya Historic Site. Head south to Meridia, right along the Alabama line to visit the birthplace of the Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers. Starkville, the home of Mississippi State University, is alive with cultural attractions and a youth-like atmosphere. Home to a college campus, this southern town is full of great shopping, historic tours, and delicious restaurants. You won’t want to miss a tour of the Cotton District. This district was formerly a collection of row houses and shanties associated with the neighborhood cotton mill. It is now filled with award-winning, brightly colored buildings evocative of Savannah, Charleston and New Orleans. For outdoor fun, travel to Enterprise and visit Dunn's Falls Water Park. Once used as the power source for a gristmill, it is now a recreational area and wildlife refuge with hiking trails and swimming. | The Capital/River Region Southwestern Mississippi is known as the Capital/River Region. History, heritage and culture can be seen in this region's magnificent architecture, Indian ceremonial mounds, and Civil War monuments, parks and battlefields. Jackson, the state’s capital is a blend of the old and the new. This city offers glimpses of the past while looking ahead to the future. From fabulous history, art and science museums to world-class exhibits and performances, Jackson is a growing metropolitan. Take the Historic Downtown Walking Tour and get a taste of what of Jackson is all about. The Old Capitol Museum, the War Memorial Building, and the Lamar Life building, Jackson’s first skyscraper, are just a few stops on the tour. Visit historic Natchez, the oldest permanent settlement on the Mississippi River. Full of attractions featuring the Natchez Trace Indians, it is also the starting point for the Natchez Trace Parkway. This parkway travels all the way to Tennessee and is, not only, the trail the Indians took when fleeing the French, and it is also a very scenic and beautiful drive. Two Civil War battle sites not to miss are Vicksburg and Edwards. Both housed battles that were turning points in the war that almost ripped a nation apart. Be sure not to miss any of the casinos that line the Mississippi River. | The Coastal Region The Southernmost part of the state is the Coastal Region. With just a bit of shoreline, they try to make every bit of it count! With pristine beaches along the Gulf Coast, it’s a great place to take of the flip-flops and stroll down the beach collecting a myriad of shells and sharks teeth. Located between the Bay of St. Louis and the Bay of Biloxi, Long Beach is a peaceful beach community to take a family vacation. Waveland has beaches that look like sugar and water that looks like it was painted right in front of your eyes. However, if you want nightlife to go along with your peaceful days, the “Playground of the South” is right next door. Biloxi and Gulfport offer Las Vegas-style casinos on every corner and fabulous nightlife.
