The natural beauty and spirit of the land is what brings today’s explorers and adventurers to Northeastern Minnesota. The nickname “Land of Lakes” comes from this region’s more than 1,600 lakes. They are the highlight of vacations here offering fantastic fishing, swimming, waterskiing and boating, while the vast woods surrounding them make for great hiking, biking, and camping. Favorites include the lakes of the Grand Rapids area, including Pokegama Lake, Lake Mille Lacs, Big Sandy and Minnewawa lakes, located in the Savanna State Forest near McGregor, and the many lakes of the Chippewa National Forest. In the winter head to the Savanna Portage and Scenic state parks to find great skiing, snowmobiling, and snow shoeing trails. The North Shore is where Lake Superior's rocky shoreline meets Minnesota's wooded backwoods and is one of the state’s favored vacation destinations. There are seven state parks highlighting the natural treasures found along the water's edge, including Gooseberry Falls, the Split Rock Lighthouse, and the state's highest waterfalls at Tettegouche and Grand Portage state parks. For a quaint harbor town, visit Grand Marais, the entrance to the Gunflint Trail, a trail leading inland to the resorts and campgrounds neighboring the Boundary Waters. In the winter, the North Shore draws outdoor enthusiasts for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and downhill skiing to places like Lutsen Mountains, the largest and highest downhill ski area in the Midwest. |
