Minnesota's Northwest Region Minnesota’s three diverse environments, the western plains and prairies, the northern coniferous forest and the eastern hardwood forests merge in the northwest area of the state. Here pine forests and deep lakes merge with rich farmlands and woods of aspen, birch, and maple. However, the real focus of the region is its lakes known for their world-class fishing. Minnesotans consider Alexandria, known as "Alex," to be the "birthplace of America” where Vikings explored long before Columbus voyaged to our country. The city is also one of the prime resort areas in the state with the shores of Osakis, Pelican Lake, lakes Miltona, Ida, Mary, the chain of lakes by Alexandria and numerous others offering great fishing for walleye, bass, northern pike and pan fish. Spanning the Canada border is the Lake of the Woods, with 65,000 miles of shoreline, 14,000 islands and a 55-mile width boasting a variety of outdoor activities including boating, camping, hunting, wildlife watching, and some of the best walleye and northern pike fishing in the state. Itasca State Park is home to the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River. Boat tours, bike trails, historic lodges, and forests of virgin pine are some of the main attractions, but the focus is the chance to walk across the Mississippi where it begins. Legend has it that the giant lumberman Paul Bunyan roamed these woods surrounding the Bemidji area. However, today, its serious anglers searching for Walleye, northern pike, bass, and perch in Bemidji Lake, the giant Red Lakes, and many others nestled between these giant waters. The region’s cities and hundreds of resorts and campgrounds summon today's explorers to discover this distinctive region of the state. |
