Michigan Winter
If a winter getaway is in store, look no farther than Michigan. Cross-country skiers enjoy the trails in the Black Mountain Forest Recreation Area. Snow covered scenery, emerald Lake Huron in the background, and clear skies make this area a favorite among locals. One of the most extensive areas is Ocqueoc Falls Bicentennial Pathway, outside of Rogers City. Follow the Ocqueoc River past its falls that at this time of year area a beautiful ice-shrouded cascade. For something a little out of the ordinary, take a day to go dog sledding. The Upper Peninsula is full of trails, as well as, festivals and competitions for the sport. A great race coincides with Marquette’s Harbor Winter Festival near Christmas. Bellaire is home to Shanty Creek Resort, a four-season, 4,500-acre resort featuring 72 holes of championship golf on 4 courses, 49 ski slopes, and 30km of cross-country skiing on which to skate and glide. Thrill seekers will want to head to Iron Mountain to ski or ride Pine Mountain Ski Resort. Home to one of the highest mountain jumps in the world, it also has great night skiing featuring skiing for any level, a large terrain park and half pipe, and eight km of cross-country ski trails. If a cosmopolitan scene is what you are looking for, head to Detroit. Bundle up and head to the Cultural Center. Spend your days inside at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Film Theatre, the Detroit Historical Museum, or listening to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at Opus One. |
