Fall in Michigan Fall in Michigan means gorgeous fall foliage, farmers markets full of the harvest, and trips to the over 30 wineries. For a beautiful display of nature at its best head to Peninsula Park where you can climb the Peninsula Point Lighthouse and watch for monarch butterflies that will make a mass migration across Lake Michigan. Visit Hiawatha National Forest’s Little Bay de Noc Recreation Area to stroll among the hemlocks, bike around the Bayshore Trails, or fish for walleye off Hunter’s Point. Pick any point along the North Country Trail to hike or mountain bike past sand dunes, through meadows, and past rivers. In September head to Paw Paw, in the heart of Grape Country, for the Wine and Harvest Festival. Here, in the “Napa Valley of the Midwest”, you can tour vineyards, see the grape stomping contest, and taste the fine wines created in the area. Tour the great lighthouses of the state in October for the Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival. Alpena hosts the festival that teaches about lifesaving stations, disasters, and rescues as well as tours beacons like the Old and New Presque Isle lighthouses. As fall freezes into winter, visitors turn to new activities while on vacation. |
