Scarborough, a small town outside of Portland, is a great vacation destination for those looking to experience small town life. This town is located in southern Maine, approximately 7 miles south of the City of Portland and easily accessible to the Maine Turnpike, Portland Jetport, and passenger rail service to Boston and other major cities. Once home to famed American painter, Winslow Homer, its no surprise this small town continues to attract artists and photographers with is beautiful sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, and abundant wildlife. In fact, the largest saltwater marsh in Maine is located within our boundaries along with Rachel Carson Wildlife lands. The Scarborough Marsh is protected at the local, state and federal levels but can be enjoyed by all at the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center. |
Within the town limits are three unique coastal areas, each with their own natural beauty and attractions. Visitors adore the quaint summer homes that date from the turn of the 20th century at Higgins Beach. This sandy beach is known for its large waves and walking-friendly beach that attracts surfers and beachcombers year round. One of the areas painted by Winslow Homer, Prouts Neck has a rocky coastline known for its beauty and intense ocean views. However, just right around the corner is its sister beach of Scarborough Beach known for its white sand, sand dunes, great surf, and warm water. Here, visitors will find The Black Point Inn, included in the National Registry of Historic Hotels of America. Built in 1878 by the Kaler family, it was originally known as The Southgate. Lastly, the protected waters of Pine Point with its white sand dunes and beautiful dune grasses is always a great family beach for swimming, building sand castles, or walking along the beach. And with a snack bar, public toilets, and abundant parking, it fulfills any vacationers needs. The area is full of activities for the entire family to enjoy. Known for its fishing, water sports, golfing, sailing, antiques, lighthouses, kayaking, whale watching, and, mostly, lobster eating, Scarborough is a great place to spend a long weekend or extended holiday. |
