Greater New Orleans A trip to Louisiana would not be complete without visiting the last region, Greater New Orleans. The first stop has to be a trip to the famous French Quarter. Eat beignets at Café du Monde and listen to eclectic mix of sounds coming from the street. Take one of the many tours offered in the quarter, such as a literary tour, haunted tour, voodoo tour, or cemetery tour. Visit Bourbon Street to hear authentic jazz music and party with the crowds in famous bars such as Howl at the Moon. To learn about the history of New Orleans, you won’t have to look to long. The city has over 40,000 buildings in the National Register of Historic Places, most of them located in the French Quarter. Make your way to Faubourg Tremé, America’s oldest African American neighborhood, where even before the Civil War, freed slaves could own land in the area. The neighborhood was instrumental in establishing Civil Rights as we know them today. The Warehouse district is home to a plethora of galleries and museums like the National D-day Museum. Head across Lake Ponchartrain to the suburbs of Old Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville, and Hammond for hip restaurants, theatre, breweries, wineries, antiques, and museums. If you want to be able to do it all, visit New Orleans. Its diverse mix of cultures and unique ways of thinking, acting, and even talking is something every visitor to Louisiana should experience. |
