Vacationing in the Bluegrass State

The Lakes and Caves Region

Lakes and caves are the theme in the south central part of the state. The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is over 125,000 acres and offers opportunities for camping, whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting, and fishing. In fact, it is rated one of the top 10 best whitewater rivers in the nation with Class I-V rapids for novice to expert rafters. Lake Cumberland, outside of Somerset is 63,000 acres and offers 1,255 miles of shoreline for hiking, biking, and camping. Striped bass and other game fish are abundant and the lake is known for its great fishing. On the border with Tennessee lies Dale Hollow Lake. Offering forty-eight square miles of surface area for boating, scuba diving, and swimming, it is also a great place for wildlife watchers with its shoreline rich with small game and waterfowl. A trip to the town of Glasgow should include a stay at the Barren River Lake State Resort with a 10,000 acres lake surrounded by rolling hills, a hardwood forest, and a world class 18-hole golf course. The Mammoth Cave National Park is home to the Green and Nolin rivers and Mammoth Cave with one of the longest cave systems on the planet. With over 360 miles of passageway and great canoeing on the rivers, it makes for quite a day trip, or stay for a week! Stay in the city of Bowling Green, the former Confederate Capital of Kentucky, for a great selection of stores, restaurants, museums, and amusement parks. Take a Civil War driving tour or a Downtown walking tour to learn more about this dynamic city.
