The History
Wander through the large rooms of the Galena & Jo Daviess County History Museum and take a close look at the Civil War memorabilia on display. While you are here, don’t miss the beautifully crafted arrowheads and the mining artifacts. Very close to it, on South Bench Street, is The De Soto House Hotel, where Abraham Lincoln was a guest. Do take in the Grant Home on Bouthillier Street, former home of Lieutenant General Ulysses Grant of the Union Army and the President of the United States of America for two consecutive terms. When you walk through the rooms of the Grant Home you will be transported back in time, because it has been restored to look the way it was in the mid 19th century. The Old Market House used to house a bustling shopping mall more than a century ago! Your visit to Galena will be incomplete without a tour of the Vinegar Hill Historic Lead Mine & Museum, which is open from May to October. When you visit a place as full of history as Galena, you must take home a few souvenirs from one of the charming antique shops on Main Street.
