History Abounds
History is a big attraction here and enthusiasts will want to see the remnants of this region’s colonial rule. Fort Frederica is the most popular tourist attraction here. In 1742, it was the site of major fortifications and a battle between the locals, led by General James Oglethorpe and the Spanish invaders. The partial remains of this fort are now part of a national park. You can see the marker for the site of the Battle of the Bloody Marsh, where the handful of locals and Highlanders defeated the Spanish in a decisive British victory. Don’t miss the wonderful lighthouse; it is one of the nation’s oldest working lighthouses and one of the most accessible. Other places worth a visit are Christ Church and the Museum of Coastal History. |
