History In 1733, James Oglethorpe planned this settlement and the community grew to become one of the 13 original colonies of the United States and the first city in the state of Georgia. Visit the Owens-Thomas House Museum where the war hero, Marquis de Lafayette stayed. See the Telfair Museum of Art, the oldest of its kind in the south. Get an idea of life in 19th century Savannah when you walk through the Davenport House Museum. Go to the Savannah History Museum to look at memorabilia from every period of Savannah’s history.
