The Capital of the New South Known as the capital of the New South, Atlanta is a bustling metropolitan that has an eclectic mix of neighborhoods with a small town feel. Offering much in the area of entertainment, Atlanta prides itself on being an area committed to the pursuit of the arts. Visit the Fox theatre for major theatrical productions and the Woodruff Arts Center for performances by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Any tourist with a green thumb will not want to bypass any of the city’s botanical gardens including the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Nunan’s Dunway Gardens. Take a trip downtown to visit the city’s many parks. Centennial Park, built for the 1996 Olympic games, and Piedmont Park both host various festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Buckhead, one of the most well known neighborhoods of Atlanta, is home to great shopping and nightlife. While in the area, visit Phipps Plaza and Lenox Square for some of the finest shopping in the South. Atlanta is also home to White Water and Six Flags over Georgia, two great amusement parks for kids and adults who are kids at heart. | The Coastal Areas Traveling southeast to will take you to Savannah and the rest of Georgia’s coastline. Beautiful natural beaches and surf bring people to this tiny strip of shoreline year after year. Savannah offers great music festivals and celebrations year round. If in town during St. Patrick’s Day, be sure to visit the river as they dye it green for the holiday! The coast of Georgia is known for its golf, as there are over 500 holes in the coastal region. Jekyll Island and St. Simon’s Island are both exclusive resort areas visited year round for pampering, beaching, and their championship courses. While in St. Simon’s be sure to visit its famous lighthouse which was rebuilt after Union forces destroyed it in 1862. The beaches of Georgia exude natural beauty found few other places on the east coast. | The Southern Rivers Area The Historic South and Southern Rivers areas of Georgia show its true heritage and people. Visit Macon and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame to learn about such native musicians as Trisha Yearwood, the Allman Brothers, R.E.M., and Otis Redding. However, if you are more of a sports fan you won’t want to miss the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the nation’s largest sports hall of fame. Next, travel to the Augusta National Golf Club, home to the Masters Golf Tournament. While in Augusta, be sure to visit the botanical gardens at the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame. Take a day-trip to Thomasville to tour antebellum homes and plantations such as Melhana the Grand Plantation. Walk the grounds to see beautiful magnolias and towering oaks. If it’s the great outdoors that calls for your trip to Georgia, don’t miss out floating down the Chattahoochee or swimming in Seminole Lake. To learn about plants and animals local to the state of Georgia, head to Albany to the Parks at Chehaw museum. There you can learn which flora and fauna make the state what it is today. | The Mountains of Georgia The Mountains of Georgia offer the true nature and adventure enthusiasts the more extreme side of the state. The area is the start point of the 2,167-mile hike of the Appalachian Trail that ends in Maine. Before you take off on that trek, be sure to catch a ride rafting down the Chattooga River.
