Vacation Guide - RentalsExpress.com © 2008

Siesta Key is an eight-mile long barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Its remote feeling, lush foliage, trees, and tropical flowers add to the ambiance of this quaint beachfront town. Its beaches are uncommonly natural with plenty of wild sea oats and protected mangroves create an exciting and beautiful habitat for the native island birds, as well as, dolphins, manatees, and other aquatic wildlife living offshore. Siesta Key is conveniently located 55 miles south of Tampa off of Highway 41 and is located near many popular destinations all over the state of Florida. Shoppers will be delighted to see all that the island’s two shopping districts have to offer. Visitors can buy souvenirs, gifts, and island clothing at over 150 unique boutiques, galleries, and shops. Dining in Siesta Key mostly revolves around seafood but there is also Italian, American, Oriental, and French cuisine to satisfy every taste. Try delicious lobster, crab, blackened fish, raw oysters, and unique Gulf Coast seafood dishes at restaurants like Ophelia on the Bay, The Lobster Pot, and the Old Salty Dog.

The things to do and see in Siesta Key may make you want to stay longer than a week. Siesta Beach has been called the World’s Finest and Whitest beach. Because the sand was created from 99% pure quartz, the beaches are soft, floury, and cool to the touch, even on the hottest day. Here, people will find picnic area, restrooms, concession stands, a playground, rails, and tennis and volleyball courts. Shell collectors will want to take a trip over to Turtle Beach at the south end of the island. Those looking to really get away from the crowds will enjoy remote Palmer Point Beach with its dense natural vegetation. While at the beach and the bay, visitors will want to enjoy all the water sports the area has to offer. Fishing, boating, dolphin tours, sunset cruises, and parasailing are only the tip of the iceberg. With nearly 50 miles of canals, waterways, bays, and the Gulf of Mexico, it is no surprise that boating is the favorite pastimes of visitors and locals to Siesta Key. There are numerous places for boat rentals, charters, and guided tours. Anglers will be thrilled to find that there are almost 1,000 species of fish in the area including barracuda, black drum, grouper, pompano, snapper, and tarpon. You may deep-sea fish, bridge fish, or surf-cast year round on and off shore. Landlubbers will find many golf courses in the area as well as bicycling and rollerblading trails through the quaint village. Of course, with the famous Florida theme parks in nearby Tampa and Orlando, a day of thrilling fun is only a short drive away. Visit Siesta Key to see Old Florida in a new light!
