Key Largo Key Largo, the first key on the trip from Florida, is only about an hour from the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area. Key Largo is known for its beautiful scenery from tropical forests to winding creeks and shocking coral formations. In fact, this key is perfectly situated between the famous Florida Everglades National Park and the fish covered coral barrier reef. Divers will love the Spiegel Grove, a 510 foot Navy ship intentionally sunk to form a hold for a new barrier reef. For this location and others, Key Largo is known as the Diving Capital of the World. Other famous dives include The Elbow, offering several historic shipwrecks, as well as, face-to-face encounters with moray eels and barracuda, the Benwood Wreck, this shipwreck occurred during World War II and is now home to huge schools of grunt and pork fish, and the Statue of Christ of the Abyss, a famed bronze statue that rises so close to the water's surface that it can be easily viewed by swimmers, as well as divers. Key Largo has grown a large community of artists who work and have galleries in the area. The islands’ rich history and beauty make it a one-of-a-kind vacation destination. |
