Delaware: The First State

Delaware, The First State, is rich in history, full of natural beauty, and home to a diverse culture. Their dedication to environmental preservation can be seen in the rolling hills and unspoiled countryside. Delaware has three regions to explore, all offering plenty of exciting activities and attractions.

Northern Delaware

Northern Delaware can be described as pastoral, sophisticated, urban, and historical, because it is truly as diverse as it seems. Visit Brandywine Valley to tour a du Pont family estate such as the Nemours Mansion and Gardens found in Wilmington. In this area visit during Christmas for beautiful lighted house tours or come during the spring to play golf at one of the many challenging courses. Wilmington is an area acclaimed for fine dining, performing arts, and world-class museums. Shoppers shouldn’t forget the tax-free shopping! For a drastic change visit Historic New Castle. Beautiful homes such as the Amstel House or the Dutch House portray exactly what Delaware looked like ages ago. Immanuel Episcopal Church was built in 1703 and is the oldest in the state. History and architecture buffs will want to spend more than one day on the cobblestone streets in this perfectly preserved colonial town. With the region only minutes from Baltimore and Philadelphia, it’s a great place to spend a few days or a few weeks!

The Central Region

The beginnings of our country can be found in the central region of the state. Walk through the town square in the capital city of Dover to see the spot where Delaware became the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Walk a couple of feet to see the famous “Painted Ladies”, a row of colorfully decorated and designed Victorian-era row houses. Visit Delaware Bay to see the shorebirds where every spring over a million of them stop on their travels south. Beach comb and relax in Bowers Beach where the sunrises are some of the best in the country. Bird and wildlife watchers will want to visit the 16,000-acre Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Some of the birds to be viewed here include waterfowl, songbirds, waders that come to nest in the upland woods, swamps, brushy thickets, grassy fields, and croplands.

The Gateway to the Ocean

Travel the “Gateway to the Ocean” in Southern Delaware. Visit Rehoboth Beach where families flock to the boardwalk to play skee ball and eat funnel cake and roasted peanuts. Lewes is the beach for those who love an area filled with nautical lore of pirates and lovers lost in sea mist. Local museums are popular in the area and continue to tell the history of these much-loved beaches. Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island are known for their quiet, laid back, lazy days spent on porches and beach chairs. It isn’t odd to walk the beach at sunset and see piers filled with people strolling along with their families. Dewey is a popular destination for the young. People spend the day riding jet skis and playing in the surf, only to spend the evening out with their friends. This region is known for its fond memories and great shoreline destinations. Historical lighthouses, old fishing towns, and a naturally beautiful coastline draw people here year after year.

Come visit Delaware to get away and enjoy a state that is unspoiled and perfectly preserved. From its cobblestone streets to its beautiful beaches, it offers itself as it has for years, naturally spectacular.
