The History The historical roots of Old Saybrook make for some interesting sightseeing. Make your way to the General William Hart House, which was once the residence of distinguished Revolution era political and military figures. Keep a look out for old houses and buildings with varying architectural styles. You will see eighteenth century colonials, saltbox houses, Georgian houses and nineteenth century federal buildings. The insightful guided tour draws attention to what is left of the old buildings on Main Street and on sites of selected historic buildings that have been replaced. The James Gallery & Soda Fountain is an interesting place to visit. This building dates back to 1790 when it was originally part of the Humphrey Pratt Tavern, where the Marquis de Lafayette stayed and made a purchase in 1824. It houses the original 1896 soda fountain where you can still enjoy old-fashioned ice cream sodas, an art gallery and a gift shop. |
