Southeast Colorado Most assume that Colorado was settled by the Gold Rush in the 19th century in the Central Rockies when, in fact, it was first discovered and settled in Southeast Colorado. The area, consisting of vast plains and the Arkansas River, is full of history and is known for its slow paced life style. Lamar, once a stopping point on the Santa Fe Trail, is home to the Great Plains Reservoir, a top spot for fishing, bird watching, hiking and biking. Birders from around the state also flock to Lamar to watch the spring migration of giant white snow geese. Pueblo, situated on the edge of the Rockies and the Arkansas River, is now known as a town with great historical and cultural attractions, as well as, plenty of opportunity for outdoor activity. One of the state’s largest, Lake Pueblo State Park’s limestone rock outcroppings make a pleasant backdrop for fishing, sailing, and numerous water sports. Springfield is the northern gateway community to the Comanche National Grasslands. The grasslands are used for recreation and wildlife habitats including hiking, biking, and camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing of over 275 bird species. |
