Northeast Colorado
The landscape of Northeast Colorado can come as a shock to new visitors to the area who are expecting the towering mountains found in the western part of the state. This region is of grasslands and plains but ideal for visitors looked for outdoor recreation involving water sports, fishing, or hunting. The area is spotted with lakes and reservoirs and is home to pheasants, antelope, deer, geese, ducks, quails, and wild turkeys. Fort Morgan is home to three museums depicting life on the western homefront and the life of the Indians that lived there before their land was taken over. Also, from town you can follow the Pioneer Trail Scenic and Historic Byway to the famed Pawnee Buttes at the Pawnee National Grassland or travel northwest to Jackson Lake for great fishing, boating, and swimming. Burlington is a town full of historical attractions and is located near Bonny State Recreation Area. It’s a great destination for warm-water fishing, windsurfing, boating, or camping. As the residents of Northeast Colorado will tell you, it does not take a mountain to make a great vacation destination. |
