The Ozarks

The Ozarks are situated on the northern border of the state. The Ozarks are an interesting formation of a plateau being carved out over millions of years by rivers, streams, and erosion. Today, they provide residents and visitors with great opportunities for recreation. Anglers flock to this region to fish for trout on the White, Little Red, in Heber Springs, and Spring Rivers, and you can also find bass and panfish on some of the smaller streams. Bull Shoals Lake, home to the town of Peel, operates the last ferry in the state and is a great activity for the whole family. The Ozark Highlands and the Ouachita National Recreation areas are great for hiking, biking, and camping in the great outdoors. For underground adventures, Arkansas has 13 caves to explore. Boating enthusiasts will want to visit Lake Norfolk in Mountain Home for exceptional views and beautiful waters.

The River Valley Region

Sophistication, charm, and beauty are what will be found in the River Valley region. Pretty little towns such as Ozark and Russellville on the Arkansas River provide hours of antiques, history, and shopping and European flavor abounds in the heart of Arkansas Wine Country, near Altus. Three family-owned wineries dating back to the 1800s offer tours, wine tasting, and lessons into the art of growing grapes. Mount Magazine, the state’s tallest mountain, is home to the newest state park. It is a great place for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and the more adventuresome can go rock climbing, hang-gliding, biking, horseback riding, or ride along the many ATV trails. The refinement of the Victorian era is preserved in all its glory in venerable Van Buren, a Mecca for arts, crafts and antiques, while at the Fort Smith National Historic Site; visitors can discover what life was like on the lawless frontier.

The Ouachita Mountain and Hot Springs

The Ouachita Mountain and Hot Springs region is known for world-class resorts, camping, rugged mountains, sparkling lakes, breathtaking vistas, and real diamonds. The Hot Springs National Park features springs of 147-degree thermal water, rich history and beautiful architecture in this little town. The Diamond lakes region is great for Crystal hunting, fishing, water sports, hiking, golf, camping, site seeing and horseback riding. Year round outdoor activity is what keeps so many visitors coming back to the area year after year.

The Central Region

The central region, the heart of the state, is home to Little Rock, the state’s capital and biggest metropolitan area. The area, including the cities of Conway, Searcy and Cabot, offer a cosmopolitan mix of historic attractions, shopping, fine dining, an exciting nightlife, and creative arts. With extensive park systems in its cities, the region provides plenty of opportunity for golf, tennis, fishing in the Arkansas River or on area lakes, hiking, or picnicking in beautiful settings. Lakes Maumelle, Bennet, and Conway all lure anglers with bass, catfish, crappie, stripers, and bream having been pulled from their waters.

The Timberlands Region

In the south, one will find the Timberlands region, home to timber, oil, deer hunting, and bass fishing. The region’s natural resources are what drew pioneers to towns like El Dorado, Camden and Pine Bluff in the 1800’s and keep them coming to visit today. A sportsman’s paradise, the area is known for its lunker bass fishing and as being one of the best deer hunting regions in the country. History lovers can revisit the Arkansas Oil Boom years, explore Civil War sites or tour beautiful antebellum mansions and historic buildings. The legacy of the pioneers can be understood by visiting sites ranging from 1800s log cabins to renovated Victorian homes and also local museums and colorful murals that tell the history of this state and region

The Delta Region

The Delta region is along the eastern border of the state and is created by the Mississippi River that nourishes some of the richest soil in the nation that yields cotton, rice, soybeans and wheat. You can relive the history of the region from the settling of the land in 1541 by the Europeans to today at countless museums throughout the region, including the Arkansas State University Museum at Jonesboro and the Museum of the Arkansas Grand Prairie at Stuttgart. The historic river ports of Osceola and Helena can still depict life as it was in the past while giving tourists all the comforts of today. Walk along quaint streets and visit antique shops. In Helena, picnicking and fishing are available in their park that overlooks the Mississippi, a boardwalk leads to the river\'s edge, and a sandy beach provides all with access to the river.

The people of this state welcome visitors to share in their diverse history and culture. Love for the outdoors and adventure abounds in this state with powerful rivers and looming mountains and plateaus to entice the courageous to hang glide, mountain climb, and kayak with all of nature’s glory. Come visit to see what your favorite region is!
