Nautical History Another highlight at Dauphin Island is a two-hour cruise that sails past Sand Island Light house and Fort Gaines overlooking the mouth of the bay. If you are lucky you can also catch a glimpse of dolphins cavorting in the waters of the gulf.
Historic Fort Gaines is a major tourist attraction. The present structure dates back to the civil war when the fort was a primary confederate stronghold guarding the entrance to the bay. Union Admiral David Farragut ran his armada past the fort in the momentous Battle of Mobile Bay with his famous cry “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead”. Visit the civil war museum inside and take a self-guided tour of this majestic fort to learn more about its turbulent history. The fort also provides a spectacular view of the bay.
