The lieu-dit " La Souleilo" is located above the village of Ercé at the edge of the forest on south facing land that remains sunny all day long. Many stone barns were built on this part of the mountain, where the grass remained green all year round and the cows could graze even in winter.
With the mechanisation of farming, the barns of Souleilo were abandoned as the slopes were too steep for tractors. They have recently been renovated, conserving their traditonal granite walls and slate roofs but on the inside providing modern comforts. From the large covered terrace with its barbecue you can relax and admire the splendid view of the Pyrenees and the Mont Valier.
Winter:
La Souleilo is 20 minutes from the ski station Guzet-Neige, which you can see from the house, and from the Etang de Lers where you can cross-country ski and snowshoe in winter or fish for trout in summer. Snow never stays long around the house, melting with the first rays of sun, and the road is plowed at every snowfall.
The rest of the year, the gîte can be the point of departure for several walks, and depending on the season you can find chestnuts, mushrooms, wild strawberries and blueberries. The region offers numerous other walks that can be quickly reached by car. Good trout fishing is within walking distance, and you can go horseriding, cycling and mountain biking in and around Ercé. Erce has an unusual link with the USA through the "montreurs d'ours" of long ago; you might be surprised at the number of inhabitants who will greet you in English.
We will be delighted to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible, particularly if you cannot speak French. Don't hesitate to contact us for an access map or any other information.
