The Cottage
We have renovated the inside of the cottage, including installation of a new wood stove, repainting, and some other finishing touches.
The wood stove is a new, fully conforming Pacific Energy unit. On a cool night, throw in a log from the complementary wood supply to take off the chill. You can also use electric baseboard heaters.
There are 2 bedrooms; the master bedroom has a double bed, and the second bedroom has sturdy custom-made single bunks, for four persons. The kitchen is fully outfitted with new appliances.
The bathroom is newly renovated, with bath / shower and composting toilet. Note that this toilet does NOT smell, and is very easy to use. It is also environmentally friendly. The only maintenance that you need to perform on this system is to rotate the composting drum once every 2 days. A complete rotation of the drum needs 6 complete turns of the handle on the side of the unit. Please turn until you hear the audible "click" sound, then stop. In the spring of 2003 we upgraded to a new, larger unit, however large volumes of people could overload the system. More than six people in the cottage can create problems.
The Cottage Site
Anstruther Lake is truly an undiscovered Kawartha jewel. It is between Peterborough and Bancroft, just west of the village of Apsley. The lake is uncrowded and very clean, fishing is good, and the lake is large enough (about 4 miles long) that you won't get bored when you decide to go for a sightseeing spin in the boat.
The cottage lot faces south, and is shaded enough that you can find just the right amount of either sun or shade on the deck. The view is spectacular. The cottage is close to the shoreline, and there is usually a gentle breeze off the lake, so bugs are not much of a problem.
The site is fairly rocky and sloped upward from the shore. It may not be appropriate for very young children or anyone who is not steady on their feet. Swimming is excellent, from the dock or the shore. There are no weeds.
